We had a partial power outage and our central air was not working during this heat wave. Called Linc and they sent out Eric to check things out. We had a blown fuse and needed some grounding work and luckily Eric had the parts needed. He explained what was going on and what to look out for and got the job done in about 2 hours which was surprising since it was a last minute, same day call.
Thanks to him we have working air again and not cooking in our house during this heat. Would recommend!

Why a “Burnt Toast Smell” or "Burning Plastic Odor" Can Point to an Electrical Problem
Many homeowners are surprised to learn that electrical issues often produce odors described as “burnt toast,” “burning plastic,” or “hot wires.” This smell usually comes from overheating components, melting insulation, or damaged wiring.
If the smell lingers, appears without an obvious source, or comes from outlets, walls, or breaker panels, it should be treated as a potential electrical concern.
Electrical smells are often subtle at first, which is why they’re frequently overlooked until damage has already started.
What to Do If You Smell Something Burning or Notice An Electrical Smell in Your House
If you notice a persistent burning smell and suspect it may be electrical, take the following steps:
Avoid using outlets or switches near the smell
Turn off the affected circuit at the breaker if it’s safe to do so
Ventilate the area temporarily by opening windows
Do not attempt to mask the smell with air fresheners
Contact a licensed electrician as soon as possible
These steps are temporary precautions only. They do not resolve the underlying electrical issue.
Why Do I Smell Burnt Toast in My House?
If you smell burnt toast in your house but cannot find any food, it usually stems from one of three sources: a hidden appliance issue, overheating electrical wiring, or a medical sensory perception called phantosmia.
How to Diagnose the Source (Quick Diagnostic Steps)
Check if others smell it: If everyone in the room smells it, the cause is physical (electrical or appliance). If only one person smells it across different rooms, consider medical factors.
Locate the odor: Does it stay near a specific outlet, light fixture, or breaker panel? If so, turn off power to that circuit immediately.
Inspect outlets and switches: Feel wall plates for unusual warmth, scorching, or buzzing sounds.
When to call a licensed electrician: If the smell persists, comes from walls or electrical panels, or is accompanied by warm outlet covers or flickering lights, call Linc Electric at 215-342-4353 for immediate 24/7 emergency service in Bucks County and surrounding counties.
Possible Causes of Burnt Toast Smell In Your House
1. Electrical Hazards (Urgent Concern)
Overheating Wire Insulation: As vinyl or plastic wire insulation melts from excessive current or loose connections, it releases an acrid odor that strongly resembles burnt toast, burnt rubber, or chemicals.
Failing Outlets & Light Switches: Arcing inside wall outlets or overloaded switchplates can char internal plastic casings without displaying visible smoke right away.
Overloaded Breaker Panels: A struggling circuit breaker or bus bar can generate localized heat, radiating a hot, toast-like burning smell through nearby walls.
2. Common Appliance Sources
Coffee Makers & Warming Plates: Leftover coffee residue or water baked onto a hot plate creates a convincing scorched-toast smell.
Toaster Crumb Trays: Forgotten crumbs trapped at the bottom of a toaster oven or standard toaster can continually char during heater cycles.
HVAC & Furnace Dust: Dust burning off heating elements during seasonal startups or a failing blower motor can mimic toast odors.

Get It Checked If You're Wondering, "Why Does My House Smell Like Burnt Toast?"
If you’re experiencing a burning smell in your home and can’t identify the cause, it’s best to have it inspected right away.
Electrical problems often produce smells described as burnt toast, burning plastic, or hot rubber. These odors can come from overheating wires, melting insulation, loose connections, or failing electrical components.
A burning smell is more likely electrical if it:
Persists or returns without an obvious source
Comes from outlets, switches, walls, or the breaker panel
Is accompanied by flickering lights, warm outlets, or tripped breakers
If you’re unsure, it’s safest to have a licensed electrician inspect the issue. Electrical problems can worsen quickly and may not show visible signs right away.
Is a Burning Electrical Smell Dangerous?
Yes, it can be.
Electrical fires often start slowly and out of sight, inside walls, ceilings, or electrical panels. The smell of burning insulation or overheated wiring is frequently the first warning sign before visible smoke or flames appear.
Ignoring a burning electrical smell increases the risk of:
Electrical fires
Damage to wiring and devices
Costly repairs
Power loss or system failure
Early inspection and repair can prevent these outcomes and protect your home and family.
What should I do if I can’t find the source of the burning smell?
If you can’t clearly identify the source, avoid using outlets or switches in the affected area, ventilate the space temporarily, and contact a licensed electrician. Masking the smell or waiting for it to go away does not resolve the underlying issue. A professional inspection is the safest way to determine whether the cause is electrical and prevent potential damage.
